For those who don’t want to use roaming service, as one of the solution for simple mobile communication in Japan, you have a choice of rental mobile. I can’t recommend this as one of the cheapest mobile contract because whether or not it becomes cheap is depending on how you use. Unless checking yourself from using too much, the billing may become more expensive than the billing of roaming service

However, I suggest rental mobile for those who come to Japan for sightseeing or very short business trip because there are some disadvantages for those who live in Japan for a couple of months to a year or more.

  • Calling charge is not flat rate, which means the longer hours you call, the more billing piles up
  • Rental charge is incurred other than communication charges
  • You need to buy an insurance for when you loose or break it
  • There are many restrictions on web usage

Pros & Cons

Rental mobile is suitable for people who want to ensure personal contact means as soon as possible and control yourself to minimum usage. Even compared with Cheap SIM, this is not very convenient to use.

  • Japanese mobile number (11digits) is given
  • incoming call is not charged

Cons

  • Phone number will be charged as often as you newly rent/li>
  • Data plan is very expensive or accessing internet is not available
