In 2012, new residency management system has been enacted and a residency card came to be issued to a foreigner who stays in Japan for more than 3 months with a very few exceptions. A person who enters into Japan from Narita airport, Chubu airport, Haneda airport or Kansai airport can receive a residency card on the day after having a passport viséd.

In this case, “undecided” is printed on a address column of a residency card. You need to decide where you live within 14 days and submit a moving‐in notification to municipality after you decide and have your address added on a column.

A person who enter into Japan from the other airports or ports needs to submit a move-in notification within 14 days, then a residency card will be sent to the address you inform to municipality.
